- TriSzy Puts Bouyon Lovers in the “Mood” with Latest Hit
Emerging Bouyon artist Tristan “TriSzy” Shillingford is capturing attention with his latest single, “Mood”—a vibrant, hypnotic track that’s quickly gaining popularity online. Since its release in April 2025, “Mood” has amassed over 6,000 views on YouTube , with fans from Dominica and beyond sharing dance videos and showering praise in the comments. “It’s been crazy how much love the song is getting,” TriSzy says. “So many people are making videos and sharing how it gets them in the mood to have fun. I love and appreciate all of it.” The single was produced by Fr3EzE, a prominent Dominican producer known for working with top Bouyon acts such as Shelly and Signal Band (“Bye to the Old Me”) and Trilla G (“Take Me As I Am”). The track was mixed and mastered by Tha WizZarD, another respected name in the genre’s production scene. Brooklyn-born TriSzy returned to Dominica as a child, attending Convent Preparatory School and the Dominica Grammar School. Upon moving back to the U.S., he began his music career as a rapper with the collective The Mixed Breed (TMB). Over time, he explored a wide range of genres—including Hip Hop, R&B, Dancehall, and Soca—eventually crafting his own style: Island Pop, a blend of all these influences. Despite his genre-blending approach, TriSzy has always remained rooted in his Dominican heritage. He’s collaborated with local and regional talents such as Colton T (“Inside Me”) and Shelly (“Bum Pain”). In 2021, he returned to Dominica to film the video for his single “If Is One Thing,” a direct response to a popular comment from a Bouyon promoter who claimed that “the only thing that can make it out of Dominica is Bouyon.” “At the time, I felt I had to prove that other genres like Hip Hop could represent Dominica too,” TriSzy explained. “So, I tackled it in song.” Fast forward to 2025, and he’s taken on Bouyon—not to prove a point, but to challenge himself creatively. “With this single, I really just wanted to see if I could sing on a Bouyon track,” he says. “I never expected the kind of love I’m getting now.” TriSzy is enthusiastic about the growth of Bouyon, especially its global acceptance at parties and festivals. He believes it doesn’t mean Soca is being left behind—it simply means audiences are embracing Bouyon alongside it. “It’s Bouyon time now,” he declares. The genre, which originated in the late 1980s with bands like WCK and First Serenade, blends elements of Zouk, Cadence-lypso, and traditional Jing Ping music. Over time, Bouyon has evolved into subgenres like Bouyon Soca, Bouyon Dancehall, and most recently, the edgier Nasty Business style. Its influence has even extended beyond Dominica, notably shaping St. Lucia’s Dennery Segment. TriSzy is another example of the reach of Bouyon, having been so influenced as a US-based artist stepping into the Bouyon spotlight. It's definitely 'made it' and the genre's future looks brighter than ever. Get in the "Mood" and stream the song online via all musical platforms. Source:On Target Comm

- Marie-Claire Giraud Makes Dazzling Debut at Dominica’s ‘Jazz N Creole’ Festival 2025
International Jazz and Opera singer Marie-Claire Giraud made a triumphant return to her homeland, Dominica, debuting to an enthusiastic audience at the 15th annual ‘Jazz ‘n Creole Festival’ set at the historic Fort Shirley in the island’s second town of Portsmouth. Raised in the Bronx but born in Dominica, Maire-Claire has performed at global events to include ‘Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival’ and the ‘Cartegena Jazz Festival’ in Colombia. In 2024, she spent a month in Hawaii performing at Sunset Jazz series courtesy of Jazz Maui and is a regular performer at the infamous Birdland Jazz Club in New York City. On Sunday May 4th 2025, Marie-Claire entered the stage overlooking Prince Ruperts Bay, fully decked in Dominican ‘creole sunset chic’- embracing the night’s theme with an ensemble curated by local designer Bella Noir and complemented with a handbag made by Tres Chic. The bel famn Domnik (beautiful Dominican woman) did not let her Dominican connection go unnoticed. “I’m happy to be home and to sing jazz in the land of my birth,” she told the crowd, drawing warm applause. Her set, which celebrated both her roots and her world-class talent, featured a masterful selection of Jazz classics, including Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” and “Caravan.” She opened with a sultry rendition of “Fever,” layered with a familiar bassline nodding to Grace Jones’ “My Jamaican Guy.” Marie-Claire channeled the spirit of Bessie Smith, giving a fiery and bluesy lament on a straying lover in her rendition of “St. Louis Blues”- a number that resonated with the audience. Her tender version of Buddy Johnson’s “Save Your Love for Me,” showed off her capacity to encapsulate the moods of the various songs she sang, providing variety and captivating the audience-many of whom were seeing her perform live for the first time. Her original song, “Chasin’ Rainbows,” was well-received by the crowd who danced and even sang along to the chorus. Introducing it as a tribute to resilience, she said, “It’s about never giving up on your dreams. No matter how fierce the storm, there’s always a rainbow at the end.” The message resonated deeply with them. Marie-Claire was backed by a dynamic, international ensemble of Anna-Flavia Zuim from New York via Brazil on piano, trumpeter Turnino Lowe of Detroit Michigan, Daniel Dantin from Martinique on drums and Dominica based Jussi Paavola (originally from Finland) on saxophone. Timon “Coba” Timothy (Dominica) played bass. Together, they created a rich soundscape that blended global Jazz influences into a captivating performance. Marva Williams, CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority and Director of Tourism, remarked, “Having Marie-Claire on this year’s lineup was essential for us—not just because of her undeniable talent, but because of the emotional connection she brings to the stage. Her artistry, energy, and authenticity resonated deeply with the audience and elevated the entire Jazz ‘n Creole experience.” Media personality Jael Joseph echoed this sentiment, calling her appearance “long overdue.” One patron, experiencing Marie-Claire for the first time, described her as “classy, captivating, and absolutely worth the VIP ticket.” The audience particularly appreciated how she engaged with the crowd, offering brief stories and historical context to the songs she performed. “It added depth to her set. I really loved that about her performance,” the patron said. Launched in 2010, ‘Jazz ‘n Creole’ has become a cultural staple in Dominica, merging Jazz with Creole rhythms and celebrating genres like Reggae, Soca, and Bouyon. Organised by Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and hosted annually at Fort Shirley, in the Cabrits National Park, the festival not only showcases stellar music but also stimulates economic activity in Portsmouth—supporting hotels, restaurants, and local vendors as attendees spend the weekend in the area. This year’s lineup also featured Jamaican reggae artist Etana, Creole Jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles, and several of Dominica’s homegrown talents including Colton T, Signal Band, Carlyn XP, Swingin’ Stars Band, Shalina, Marie Pascale, and Abiyah Yisrael. Marie-Claire hopes this will not be her last stint at Jazz “I really enjoyed myself on the stage and I especially appreciated the hospitality from the DDA Team. I hope we can do this again.” In the meantime, she will be releasing her jazz album Caravan this June. It will feature covers of known classics as well as her original songs “Frank’s Song” and “Chasin Rainbows.” Marie-Claire, an accomplished actress who has starred in several off-Broadway shows will also be playing a lead role in her first feature film set for release in 2026. - 2025 RCP MMI Eye Surgery Medical Mission
A Collaboration Between the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Medical Ministry International, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, and the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services. In a powerful demonstration of international collaboration and service to humanity, the Rotary Club of Portsmouth (RCP) and Medical Ministry International (MMI), together with the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, and the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH) successfully completed the 2025 RCP MMI Eye Surgery Medical Mission. Launched under the patronage of Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton, this mission has made a tangible and lasting impact on the lives of Dominicans—restoring vision to 80 individuals who were once legally blind, partially blind, or fully blind due to cataracts. Over the span of two weeks, patients received cataract surgeries, marking not only a medical success, but also a profound restoration of independence, dignity, and hope. Each patient’s story is a testament to the transformative power of care and collaboration. As recalled by McMarara Joseph, President of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, “An elderly man arrived at the clinic unable to see the chair before him or navigate the room without help. Upon returning for his checkup the following day he walked out unassisted. Another patient, upon regaining sight, joyfully recognized a familiar voice, exclaiming, “Sammy, you that there?” These are not just medical outcomes—they are moments of reconnection, renewal, and rebirth.” This mission would not have been possible without the tireless dedication of our collective partners: ● Hon. Cassanni Laville, Minister of Health, Wellness and Social Services, and the team from the Ministry for facilitating all required approvals and ensuring seamless coordination throughout the mission. ● Ms. Nancy Francis, CEO of DCFH, and Dr. Donald C. Peters, President of the Dominica Hospitals Authority, for their unwavering leadership and the exemplary service delivered by the medical and administrative teams at the Brenda Strafford Foundation Eye Center. ● The outstanding medical volunteers from Medical Ministry International, including Dr. Barbara Skinner, Dr. Ralph Crew, and Dr. Dan—for whom Dominica became the first new mission country in over a decade. Their compassion and expertise were the driving force behind every successful procedure. ● The Rotary Club of Portsmouth, whose local coordination—spearheaded by Past AG Sammy Wyke, McMarara Joseph and Vice President and Projects Chair Lizra Fabien—ensured the mission was well executed on the ground. ● The Rotary Club of Dominica and all supporters of past vision initiatives, particularly VOSH, whose 30-year legacy of eye care laid the foundation for this mission’s success. This mission is part of a broader legacy of service by the Rotary Club of Portsmouth and its partners, which includes projects such as the refurbishment of the emergency room at Portsmouth Hospital, distribution of thousands of devices to students during the pandemic, training and resourcing of beekeepers, the provision of citrus plants to northern farmers, and the installation of playgrounds in schools. The success of the Eye Surgery Medical Mission reaffirms our belief that strategic partnerships—rooted in service and shared purpose—can transform lives. Mr. Joseph shared, “We extend our deepest gratitude to the patients and their families, whose strength and trust made this mission meaningful. We also thank the people of Dominica, the medical fraternity, and the countless volunteers and supporters—both local and international—who brought this initiative to life. Together, we see a brighter Dominica.”
- IRC to Present Modernized Electricity Rate Structure at Stakeholders’ Forum
The Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) will present a modernized electricity rate structure for Dominica Electricity Services Ltd. (DOMLEC), at a Stakeholders’ Forum scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 2025. The forum will inform stakeholders about: • Key elements of the rate-setting process • Guiding principles applied in reducing the base tariff; and • Efforts undertaken to modernize DOMLEC’s tariff structure and regime This event is being held ahead of the completion of the ongoing rate review for DOMLEC, as the IRC seeks to provide stakeholders with the opportunity to offer valuable feedback. A tariff or rate structure refers to the set of rules and charges that a utility company uses to determine the cost of providing electricity to its customers. As Dominica’s electricity regulator, the Commission views the modernization of DOMLEC’s rate structure as essential to respond to economic trends, align new rates with actual operational costs, and offer more options tailored to facilitate customers’ consumption patterns. Later this year, the IRC and DOMLEC expect to consult with stakeholders on two additional tariff-related proposals, before finalizing the rate review: the Cost-of-Service Study and the Rate Proposal. The IRC continues to encourage public and stakeholder participation and input, as this is a requirement for the undertaking.

- Mental Health Awareness: A Growing Global Priority
By: Variety News Group Mental health has emerged as one of the most pressing public health challenges of the 21st century, with increasing awareness, dialogue, and urgency surrounding the issue worldwide. From anxiety and depression to burnout and trauma, millions of people across all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life are affected—yet stigma and access to care remain significant barriers. A Global Concern According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly one in eight people globally lives with a mental disorder. The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified the crisis, with isolation, loss, and economic uncertainty contributing to a dramatic rise in reported cases of anxiety and depression. Today, mental health is no longer seen as a private issue but a shared societal responsibility. Breaking the Silence One of the most positive shifts in recent years has been the increasing willingness to talk openly about mental health. Celebrities, athletes, and influencers have played a role in destigmatizing conditions that were once hidden in shame. Public campaigns and digital platforms have amplified these conversations, encouraging more people to seek help without fear of judgment. “We must treat mental health with the same urgency and importance as physical health,” said a recent UN health envoy. “The mind and body are deeply connected, and ignoring one undermines the other.” Challenges in Access and Equity Despite progress, challenges remain. Mental health services are often underfunded and unevenly distributed. In many parts of the world, especially in low-income regions, access to trained professionals is scarce, and cultural stigmas persist. Even in developed nations, long wait times and high treatment costs can deter individuals from receiving proper care. Mental health advocates are calling for increased investment in community-based services, better workplace mental health policies, and the integration of mental wellness into education and healthcare systems. The Road Ahead The path forward lies in a combination of awareness, education, and systemic reform. Governments, employers, and communities are being urged to treat mental well-being not as a luxury, but as a fundamental human right. As the conversation continues to grow, the message is clear: mental health matters—every day, for everyone. If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health challenges, don’t wait to reach out. Professional help, support groups, and helplines are available in most regions. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
