- DOMINICA SET TO WELCOME OVER EIGHT THOUSAND CRUISE PASSENGERSIN A SINGLE DAY
Dominica is set to extend a warm welcome to over eight thousand (8,000) cruise passengers on Monday, January 29, 2024. The MV AIDAdiva, with a passenger capacity of three thousand two hundred and fifty-six (3,256), and the MSC Seaside, accommodating up to five thousand one hundred and seventy-nine (5,179) guests, will dock at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth and Woodbridge Bay Port, respectively. In the ongoing 2023/2024 cruise season, Dominica proudly reports that one hundred (100) cruise vessels have already visited, bringing a total of one hundred forty-four thousand seven hundred and eighty-six (144,786) visitors. Of these, one hundred two thousand six hundred and forty (102,640) visitors disembarked to explore, with fifty-eight thousand three hundred and nine (58,309) participating in organized tours. Notably, Dominica has also been honored with inaugural visits from eleven (11) distinguished vessels, such as MSC Explora 1, MV Carnival Venezia, Le Bellot, MV Marella Voyager, MS Vista, MS Borealis, MV Celebrity Beyond, SY Sea Cloud Spirit, MV Aida Mar, MV Costa Fortuna and MV Azzurra. The committed team of tourism service providers, ranging from knowledgeable tour operators and friendly taxi drivers to enthusiastic vendors and experienced tour guides, stands ready to ensure that every moment spent on the island is cherished and memorable. ROSEAU, Dominica, (January 26, 2024) – The environmental team of the MV AIDAPerla, in line with its dedication to Operations Ocean Alive,& conducted an impactful beach cleanup on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Aiming to preserve and protect the environment, focusing on the oceans, the crew conducted the cleanup along the coastline, hosting Woodbridge Bay Port,Police Base, and Ma Boyd Bar. Led by the Environmental Health Officer, Jörg Mensdorf, the team of twenty (20) dedicated crew members collected several types of waste, including plastics, fishing nets, and bottle caps. The gathered garbage was later disposed of at the landfill. Notably, officers from the Product Development Team of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) also actively participated in this all-essential beach cleanup. "We are thrilled to be here, honoring our commitment to the environment alongside our cast and crew members; stated Jörg Mensdorf. He further expressed the MV AIDAperla's pride in contributing to this widespread initiative geared toward protecting our oceans." Odile Jno Baptiste, the Product Promotions Manager at the Discover Dominica Authority, commented, "Events like these beach cleanups are just one of the many ways to give back to local communities and safeguard the environment of Dominica, the Nature Island. - UWI to host Eighth Emerging Leaders Conference
Dominica’s Chapter of the UWI Global Campus Guild of Students and Fine Foods Inc. will host the eighth Emerging Leaders Conference on Saturday, 27 January and Saturday, 17 February, 2024. Each year, the Conference brings about forty (40) secondary schools student leaders together for skills-building seminars and workshops in several key leadership areas. This year is the turn of student leaders of Convent High School, St. Mary’s Academy, St. Martin’s Secondary School and Wesley High School. Ms. Annalyn Joseph, Chair of the Dominica Chapter of the UWI Global Campus Guild of Students explained that the aim of the Conference is to equip students who hold leadership positions in their schools’ with the skills they need as they grow into their current and future roles. “We at UWI believe that leadership skills can and should be instilled in students from a young age as a way of preparing them to be willing and able to step up to leadership positions competently as they grow,” said Joseph. The Emerging Leaders Conference is an initiative of the Dominica’s Chapter of the UWI Global Campus Guild of Students, and started in 2016. Each year, four secondary schools are invited to nominate ten (10) student leaders for the programme. Former government minister Dr. Kenneth Darroux has been arrested and handed down two charges under the Firearms Act of Dominica. This follows his decision to order gun add-ons without obtaining a license. He is represented by lawyers Lennox Lawrence and Jodi Luke. The Magistrate granted bail to Dr. Darroux in the sum of EC$30,000.00 to return to court today, January 24, 2024, where the two charges will be read to him. Under the Firearm Act of Dominica, If found guilty under the Firearm act of Dominica, Dr. Darroux could be fined EC$15,000.00 and be sent to prison for up to ten years. #Guns #offense #Illegal
