The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence announces the close-out of Dominica’s participation in the ACT in Mathematics Cohort 2 programme. The initiative supported 30 participants from all 14 secondary schools, together with the Learning Support Advisor for the West.
Advancing Caribbean Teachers (ACT) in Mathematics Cohort 2 is a regional professional
development initiative involving Dominica, Barbados, and Grenada, supported by the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus) and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). In Dominica, the programme began with a two-day face-to-face workshop on November 13 and 14, 2025, and continued through an online Community of Practice using Moodle, Zoom, WhatsApp, and COL Commons.
Throughout the programme, teachers demonstrated strong commitment and enthusiasm. Participants applied the 5 Master Moves, integrated digital tools including GeoGebra, PhET, Polypad, Didax, Wordwall, and Liveworksheets, and used gender-responsive strategies to support more inclusive mathematics instruction. The programme also strengthened teacher collaboration, improved confidence with technology, and supported OER credentialing.
National coordination was led by the Mathematics Curriculum Officer, who established a WhatsApp group, liaised with Heads of Department, coordinated logistics, and ensured that resources were procured and delivered to participants. The official certificate/ close-out ceremony for the programme will be held at 10:00 am on 22 June, 2026 at the UWI Auditorium.
"The commitment shown by our teachers throughout this programme has been commendable. We are seeing clear signs of stronger classroom practice, greater confidence in the use of digital tools, and more engaging mathematics instruction across our secondary schools."
— Miss Meloticia Mills, Mathematics Curriculum Officer
The Ministry thanks school leaders, Heads of Department, participating teachers, UWI Mona, and the Commonwealth of Learning for their support and partnership in the successful implementation of this initiative.
