Dominica Observes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026

The Dominica Council on Ageing (DCOA) is calling on citizens to stand against elder abuse and show solidarity with older persons as the country joins the international observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2026.

This year's theme, "Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work," emphasizes the need to move beyond simply recognizing the issue and take meaningful action to protect older persons from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination.

As part of the observance, the DCOA is encouraging members of the public to wear purple on June 15 as a symbol of support for older persons and a commitment to ending elder abuse. The organization is also promoting the social media hashtag #RefuseToAbuse to raise awareness and encourage community engagement.

According to the Council, every older person deserves to live with dignity, respect, and security. The campaign highlights key messages including the importance of respecting elders for the wisdom and experiences they bring to society, caring for older persons as an expression of humanity, and standing firmly against all forms of abuse.

"Elder abuse is not only a family issue but a community concern," the Council noted. "Older persons deserve care, not fear, and every one of us has a role to play in ensuring their wellbeing and protection."

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as an opportunity to educate communities about the signs of elder abuse and the importance of safeguarding the rights of older persons. The observance also encourages individuals, families, institutions, and policymakers to work together to create safer environments where seniors can thrive free from harm.

The Dominica Council on Ageing is urging citizens across the island to participate in this year's activities and to reaffirm their commitment to protecting the nation's older population.

"Every older person deserves dignity, respect and a life free from abuse."
