The Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment is set to officially launch works on a new wastewater treatment initiative in the community of Sauce, Soufrière, aimed at improving environmental health and protecting coastal ecosystems.
The project, known as the Sauce Grey and Black Water Treatment Initiative, will involve the construction of small in-stream wetlands and the installation of septic tanks. These measures are designed to enhance wastewater management within the community and reduce contamination entering the nearby Soufrière Bay.
The initiative is being implemented under the OECS BioSPACE Project, a programme funded by the European Union that supports Caribbean Small Island Developing States in strengthening biodiversity management and building resilience to climate change through improved ecosystem practices.
The official launch is scheduled for April 1, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at the Local Area Management Authority (LAMA) Building in Soufrière. The ceremony will feature remarks from Cozier Frederick, Minister for Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment, as well as Denise Charles-Pemberton, Parliamentary Representative for the Soufrière Constituency. Representatives from the OECS BioSPACE Project, along with the project’s contractor, supervisory consultant, and members of the Village Council, are also expected to participate.
The launch will officially mark the commencement of works and provide an opportunity for the public and media to learn more about the project’s scope and expected impact. Media representatives will also have the chance to conduct interviews with key stakeholders following the ceremony.
