Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed plans to assign a Minister with specific responsibility for Dominica’s creative industries. The announcement was made during a parliamentary discussion on the Government’s EC$108 million fluctuating overdraft.
The initiative forms part of efforts to establish the Dominica Creative Economy Development Agency (DCEDA), which is expected to strengthen support and coordination across the creative sector. The agency would cater to a wide range of creatives, including musicians, performers, filmmakers, audiovisual professionals, creative entrepreneurs and other industry stakeholders.
This is particularly significant because it signals that Dominica is moving toward treating the creative industries as an economic sector—not simply a cultural or entertainment activity. It could create opportunities for training, entrepreneurship, intellectual property, production, marketing and commercialization of creative talent.
