Today, as we observe World Bee Day, under the theme ‘Bee together for people and the planet – A partnership that sustains us all,’ we celebrate the essential role bees and other pollinators play in sustaining our environment, agriculture, and food systems.
World Bee Day is about all bee species, not just honey bees. Across our forests, farms, and communities, pollinators contribute daily to biodiversity, food production, and the overall health of our ecosystems. Their survival depends on healthy natural habitats, reminding us all of the importance of environmental protection, sustainable agricultural practices, and greater awareness of the role pollinators play in our everyday lives.
Here in Dominica, this observance also gives us the opportunity to reflect on the continued growth and development of the beekeeping sector. Through ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, beekeepers, farmers, regional partners, and other stakeholders, important progress continues to be made towards strengthening and modernizing the industry.
One significant area of development is the ongoing work surrounding honey standards, which is critical to improving product quality, protecting the integrity of authentic local honey, and strengthening consumer confidence. These efforts are also important for supporting our growing number of value-added producers who continue creating innovative products including beeswax products, infused honey products, cosmetics, and other bee-related products that add value to the sector and create new economic opportunities.
We also welcome the passage of the Food Safety Bill in Parliament, which represents a major step forward for food safety and consumer protection in Dominica. This legislation will help address the issue of adulterated honey and promote greater accountability and transparency within the marketplace, while protecting both consumers and genuine producers who work hard to maintain high standards.
I am confident that on our present path, the future of the beekeeping sector in Dominica is bright. More young people are becoming involved in the industry, awareness continues to grow, and there is increasing recognition of the value bees bring to agriculture, biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and national development.
On this World Bee Day, I encourage everyone to continue protecting pollinators, preserving natural habitats, and supporting local beekeepers as we work together towards a stronger and more sustainable future.
Happy World Bee Day.
