The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) on Monday night ushered in a new chapter for Roseau North, unanimously ratifying businesswoman and educator, Ashma McDougall, as its candidate to succeed outgoing Member of Parliament Miriam Blanchard, who recently resigned for health reasons. The decision was endorsed by the Party's National Executive Committee following Ms. McDougall's unopposed nomination by the DLP’s Roseau North Constituency Association. The party takes this opportunity to express its heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Blanchard for her dedicated years of service to the people of Roseau North and the wider Commonwealth of Dominica, while extending its full support and best wishes as she focuses on her recovery. A daughter of the constituency, born in Bath Estate and living in Goodwill, McDougall described the moment as both humbling and an honour. She also pledged to work tirelessly for the advancement and upliftment of the people of Roseau North.
"I am humbled and honoured by the vote of confidence reposed in me by the Dominica Labour Party, the Roseau North Constituency Association and the many constituents who have encouraged me to step forward at this important time," she said. "I do not take this responsibility lightly. Roseau North is a constituency rich in talent, resilience and potential. I am committed to listening, learning and working alongside the people of the constituency to help create opportunities, strengthen communities and deliver meaningful results."
An economist, entrepreneur and youth advocate, McDougall has served in several leadership roles including President of the National Youth Council of Dominica and Executive Director of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce. Her work in youth empowerment, economic development and entrepreneurship has earned recognition nationally and throughout the region. Giving his full endorsement, Prime Minister and DLP political leader Roosevelt Skerrit said, “Ashma's candidacy reflects the Dominica Labour Party's continued commitment to attracting capable, energetic and forward-thinking individuals who are prepared to contribute to the country's development and improve the lives of its citizens.”
With the by-election now constitutionally due in the coming weeks, The Prime Minister declared that the DLP’s base is energised and anxious to hit the ground running. He also disclosed that official details of the campaign will be announced over the weekend.
